Octavo, original red morocco grain cloth, spine gilt lettered, arms of Toronto in gilt on front cover, gilt advertisement for the St. Nicholas Saloon (58 King St. East), on rear cover. Yellow pastedowns with ads. Issued without free endpapers. pp (2, title leaf), [1, blank], (1, ad), (i)-lii (General Index, Preface, Introduction), (1)-331, [1, blank], i-lxxi (ads, many pictorial. many printed in reddish-orange), (1, title page for MACLEAR & CO.'S CANADIAN ALMANAC AND REPOSITORY OF USEFUL KNOWLEDGE, FOR THE YEAR 1856, being leap year...), 2-86 (text in double columns), 87- (104), ads, many pictorial + 8 leaves of ads printed both sides in reddish-orange in main text body, extra to the pagination. Ex library, rebacked, with most of original spine cloth laid down (1 cm lacking at head, and some cloth wrinkling there, but all gilt lettering still present), spine a little darkened with light sticker shadow; covers have small black soil spots and light evidence of removed tape from inner margins; inner hinges reinforced with white cloth tape and blank leaf supplied front and rear; front pastedown has a small contemporary ink name and the nice bookplate of Joseph J. Murphy; title page has a small library rubber stamp and a small corner chip (no printing affected); page edges darkened; thin text paper lightly toned; otherwise a VG, clean, tight and unworn copy. Rare in the market.

Herbold, Chippewa, ON, in designated space on rear cover. Pictorial ad for Dr. Thomas' Eclectic Oil inside front cover, small wood cut illustrations, other ads, monthly charts, and testimonials from Canadians in text. This Toronto patent medicine / snake oil firm moved their business from Newcastle to Toronto in 1874 and were located at 21 Front Street in 1885. See Driver, Culinary Landmarks, p. 301. This almanac contains has no cookery recipes. AMICUS locates only one copy (U of Sask.)
