A novel about the Indians of Western Canada by this eminent Canadian anthopologist. Nicely designed book, with the ever-pleasing illustration of Thoreau MacDonald (32 drawings), stylized title page vignette illustration (in mauve) by A.Y. Jackson, endpaper maps by three Jackson women. Edison B32. Scarce in this condition.

Blue-grey cloth boards with illustration of trilliums and pinecones in green, bright gilt stamped titles to cover and spine, endpapers illustrated with green garland-framed poetry. Yellowing to page edges, else fine. Cream dust jacket has partial splits to flap folds; light soiling to panels; spine lightly darkened, with splits to spine folds internally repaired with brown paper tape; in all, a good example, but still respectable in appearance. Inscribed on front blank: "To Maud Hathaway with all good wishes from R.H. Hathaway, Christmas 1921".Printed label on the half-title states "Ernest J. Hathaway. Presented by Maud (Snarr) Hathaway". Very attractive cover, jacket, and endpaper illustration by J.E.H. MacDonald, with some lettering by Thoreau MacDonald. Edison E1. I presume this copy was Hathaway's gift to his wife. BAL 2731.

Price-clipped green dust jacket with black illustration and lettering by Thoreau MacDonald has sunning and light spots to spine; nicks to spine tips; front panel has a one inch closed tear and minor rubbing; VG otherwise. The Canadian issue, with jacket spine bearing the Thomas Allen imprint, and the flap states "New Edition of this Magnificent History - Printed in Canada" Printer not stated, but made from plates of the Boston, 1944, first edition.

Light green decorated boards printed in gilt. 15 leaves.#429 of 495 copies, printed on English hand-made paper. Inscribed by the author "Professor Alexander, One of the builders of that 'invisible Canada' which shall endure forever. In appreciation of a life rich with service. Wilson MacDonald Toronto, June 30th, 1927". Of more note than the writing is the Thoreau MacDonald design - 11 lovely decorative initials, decorative head-line to every page, lettering to spine, cover, title page and half title, and the handsome design to front cover and title page. Edison B6. Rebacked with blue cloth, covers faded, bit of wear to outer corners; internally fine. The inscribee was likely William John Alexander (1855-1944) , English Professor at the University of Toronto, who retired in 1926.
