OFFICIAL PROGRAMME of the fourth annual meet of the New York State Division, LEAGUE OF AMERICAN WHEELMEN

19 x 15.5 cm. Pink pictorial paper covers printed in red, green and brown. Text printed in green. pp (32), including 4 pages of ads at front and 10 pp ads at rear, some pictorial, 10 ads pertaining to cycling. Vignette illustrations in text. Vertical ripple to the whole; mouse nibble to lower edge from p 13 through rear cover (maximum 3 x 0.9 cm, well away from any printing); mild foxing to cover, mostly to rear cover; VG or better overall, no creases nor owner marks. With the original unused mailing envelope which shows a Buffalo return address (881 Main Street), with a bison against a high wheel bicycle. The printed side of the envelope is browned and spotted, with the printed portion faded. The meet was held at Buffalo on 3 and 4 September, 1886. The text contains a introduction including comment on the roads and of Buffalo as a "wheelman's Elysium", information on the committees, hotels, transportation, the LAW's business meeting (3 pages), the parade, the 10 races at the Buffalo Driving Park, the annual tour of the LAW, and more. A RARE piece from the age of the high wheel ("penny farthing") era of the bicycle.

9 x 22 cm, printed receipt, W.G. Shack, Bicycles, 875 Main St., Buffalo, NY. 1 July, 1892. Accomplished in ink, to Jno. B. Milley, $60.00, signed by W.G. Shack. Picture of a penny farthing high wheel bicycle at left. Creased, lightly soiled, short tears neatly repaired on blank verso; good. Mr. Milley paid sixty dollars in full for his bike. That's over $1500 in today's money, about the price of a better road bike weighing 20 pounds with 12-14 gears. Milley's beast had one gear and would have weighed 75-100 pounds. See you at the top of the hill !

Ads for the United States Playing Card Company, with various patterns and special decks depicted. Inner hinges cracked; most of front panel (repaired) of dust jacket laid in; red spine lettering just a mite dulled; else fine and tight, no owner names. The title page continues: "A descriptive and comprehensive Guide on the Rules and Plays of this interesting game, including table, definition of phrases, finesses, and a full treatise on Skat as it is played to-day." A scarce book one of the best three-handed card games, German in origin.

There will be other prizes including a prize for best wheelman from Niagara and Orleans Counties. Races will adhere to the rules of the American Wheelman's League. His five-minute program was acclaimed the greatest feee skating performance of all time." - jacket. Flip action corners let you see Jackson in motion. Now, of course, everybody does the triple Lutz.
