BUTLER, Samuel, 1835-1902
SHAKESPEARE'S SONNETS reconsidered, and in part rearranged, with introductory chapters, nots, and a reprint of the original 1609 edition
London: Longmans, Green, 1899.
Tall octavo, original olive cloth gilt, black endpapers. pp xii, 328 + tipped in advertisement leaf. No tipped in "Further errata" after Contents. Fore and bottom page edges rough trimmed. Spine lightly darkened, lightly rubbed, with moderate wear at head; small bumps to outer corners and light wear to fore edges; yellowing to page edges; upper outer corner of title leaf clipped away (no text loss); acidic endpapers have caused yellowing to blank sides, title page, and blank verso of last leaf; in all, good externally, VG internally, text unworn, tight in the binding. Inscribed on verso of front free endpaper "Wm. H. Peet from the author November 1899". This controversial work advanced the theory that if the sonnets were rearranged, they told a story about a homosexual affair. It is likely that Butler himself was "in the closet". William H. Peet was a Longmans employee who managed the advertising department and edited the house journal.
