First published in 1871, with the second edition, enlarged, coming in 1879, this third edition contains Jevons' Prefaces to the first two editions, as well as his widow Harriet's Preface to the Third Edition on pp li-lii, where she states that this edition is an exact reprint of the second edition, except for the addition of some books to the Bibliography. An important book in the history of economics, and especially in the history of mathematical economics. Here Jevons systematically presents the marginal utility of value theory, which theory marks the dividing line between classical and modern economic theories. This book attacked the classical Ricardo-Mill school's theory of value, arguing that instead value depends entirely on utility, and also that if economics is to be regarded as a science at all, it must be a mathematical science.
