Acosta was the son of a noble Portuguese family which had be forced to convert to Catholicism. He fled Portugal for Amsterdam where he could practice his ancestral religion, Judaism. Reacting against Rabbincal Judaism, he formulated his Eleven Theses, which are for the first time translated into a book in English here. He was exiled and reviled by the Jewish community, flogged in public in the great synagogue, spit upon, his books burned. and committed suicide as a result. This book is his autobiography, with new material for the first time translated into English. Uncommon book.

Cowen was an American publisher and author "born in New York City, the son of German immigrants. He entered the printing business in 1878, and, the following year, in cooperation with a group of distinguished New York Jews, founded the Anglo-Jewish weekly, The American Hebrew. As its editor and publisher for 27 years, Cowen participated actively in the major issues and campaigns arising during the era of Jewish mass immigration. He was instrumental in publishing the works of such figures as Oscar S. Straus, Max J. Kohler, Henry Pereira Mendes, Emma Lazarus, Mary Antin, and Alexander Kohut. From 1905 to 1927 Cowen served as an official of the US Immigration Service at Ellis Island and in 1906 went to Russia on a special mission to report on the causes of immigration from Eastern Europe, with emphasis on Jewish Problems." - Encyclopedia Judaica. Grey cloth. Spine is lightly age-darkened and with a 1/8 inch tear at head; endpapers and page edges lightly yellowed; else fine. Price-clipped dust jacket has shallow chips to bit darkened spine, with a small hole near centre of spin e; skinned spot to rear flap; VG otherwise. A World War II aviation novel, no doubt autobiographical. The hero, a Jew, is a tail gunner in a B-24 over Italy. The author was an aerial gunner in the 15th Air Force and won the Air Medal four times. "The first war novel to picture air combat from the enlisted men's point of view."- jacket flap. Of further interest is the fact that Falstein accused novelist Joseph Heller of plagiarizing parts of this book in writing CATCH-22.
