Front free endpaper with the ownership stamp of J.W. van Woensel Kooy. >>> First edition of this influential collection of essays and musings by William Godwin, one of the great intellectual English gadflies of his age - radical freethinker, atheist, anarchist, philosopher, economist, novelist, essayist, biographer, proponent of free love, husband of Mary Wollstonecraft and father of Mary Shelley. Essays include: Of an Early Taste for Reading; Of Public and Private Education; Of Cohabitation; Of Riches and Poverty; Of Beggars; Of Servants; Of Politeness; Of Learning; Of English Style; etc., etc. Much of the first part of the book, on education and child-rearing, arose from discussions between Godwin and Wollstonecraft, and the collection as a whole had a powerful influence on Thomas Malthus and other thinkers of the age. "In all his early life Malthus was brought into close contact with the supporters of radical not to say revolutionary views; and his father was a zealous partisan of the new doctrines. Godwin's Enquirer (1797) was naturally a topic of conversation between father and son; their discussion started a 'general question of the future improvement of society'. and he accordingly wrote and published a book called "An Essay on the Principle of Population" (Palgrave). Part I, on education, presents "the most remarkable and advanced treatise on education to appear at the end of the eighteenth century" (Peter H. Marshall, William Godwin). "Child-centred learning", very modern in its approach. ESTC T94276; Goldsmiths 16911; Kress B3397.
