Minor use to spine ends and outer corners; chromolitho frontis. has foxing on the black recto and margins of verso, with foxing to margins of title page; yellowing and light foxing to page edges; creases to tissue guard at frontispiece; tissue guard of chromolitho at p 216 has long tears and is partially adhered to the image; near fine otherwise. Number 1 in the publisher' s Fireside Library series. A later printing. First was in 1856. Contains The Copper-Mine, The Snow King, The Iron King, The Fall of the Hats and Caps, Perserverance, The Three Pictures, Ragnar Lodbrok, Hakon the Good, The Story of Queen Astrid, King Olave, and Harald Hardrade. Folk tales and historical sketches for younger readers. "Perserverance" is about Carl Linnaeus. Translator not indicated in book nor in library records.

Five issues. 8 page British comic for a juvenile audience printed in red and black on newsprint, folded once horizontally to make quarto pages. Light yellowing as always, VG clean & unworn copies otherwise. No. 1413, 26 April; no. 1417, 24 May; no. 1418, 31 May; no. 1420, 28 June, no. 1423, 09 Aug. Charlie Chaplin appears on each front cove. Die cut eyeholes to front cover and text, the eyes encapsuled in plastic inside rear cover, the pupils moveable when shaken. "My eyes not only move but also light up at night." - front cover. Chip to lower outer and upper inner corners of front cover and lower inner corner of rear cover; outer corners of rear cover cracked; partial split to lower spine neatly repaired; VG otherwise. Spine sunned to tan, as almost always with this colour; light sunning to inner margins of sides; bit of rubbing to gilt figure at centre of front cover; Xmas, 1864, ink inscription to front free endpaper; foxing (heavy in places) and small soil spots in text throughout; small hole to lower outer corner of one leaf (well away from any text); this otherwise a VG unworn copy of this didactic (how Parliament works) juvenile novel by a prolific writer for young people. Osborne dates 1861. Online British Library catalogue shows only this 1863 printing.

Octavo, beige boards, spine stamped in red (later issue binding, first was black cloth, spine lettered in bronze). Small shallow bump to lower inner corner of rear cover and to lower edge of front cover, very nearly fine otherwise, clean, no owner names. The dust jacket is only fair; with a thumbnail-size chip at foot of spine, smaller chip, tears, at head of spine, large chip to upper outer corner of rear panel; one inch tear at upper inner corner of front panel; short creased tears at top edge of rear panel; colours still bright, flap prices intact. This was Aiken's first novel, written at age 17, and third published book overall, a magic & mystery story for younger readers. Quite scare in first edition.

VG clean and attractive copy still. Variant title page with "Little Men vs "Little Men". BAL 185 assigns no priority. First book edition. First published in parts in London Oct. 1877-Sept. 1878. The sequel to EIGHT COUSINS, about a boy who runs away FROM the circus. Boys play a bit of baseball. Also noted in green cloth.
