With illustrations by the author / artist. Bice, from London, Ontario, was a member of the OSA and was elected to the Order of Canada in 1973. From 1940 to 1972, he was the curator of the Williams Memorial Art Gallery and Museum (it was renamed the London Regional Art and Historical Museums and now is called the Museum London).

"A story for boys and girls" set in South Niagara. Comic illustrated endpaper map includes, St. Catharines, the Welland Canal, Thorold, the Falls, Welland, Port Colborne, Ft. Erie, and Chippawa. Black Creek shows an African native with big lips, a Red Indian gets struck by lightening. Uncommon Canadian juvenile.

Interestingly, the author is erroneously given as "Farrar" on the spine. (3)-323, [1, blank], [4, ads], [1, blank] pp + frontispiece and 3 plates (at pp 86, 174, 244). Spine very lightly darkened, with gilt lettering rubbed and dulled; half inch split to front inner hinge neatly repaired; top page edges darkened; else a fine copy, the pictorial front cover remarkably bright and unrubbed. #16 in the publisher's American Boys' Series (front cover gives "American Boys [sic] Series" though the spine has it right). Ads at rear list up to number 85 in the series, and the last page of ads lists "New Titles Added in 1902". Brotherhood of the White Cross # 4. Canadian author.

Page edges tanned; spine lightly sunned with narrow blank ink numerals by pen near centre; parish library inscription and large ink numerals on front pastedown; cover label has some chips along left side and light rubbing; light foxing to first few leaves; a good, sound copy otherwise. >>>Helen Wiseman Morrow was born in Halifax (sister of Canadian author Susan Morrow Jones and cousin of writer Alice Jones) to a wealthy merchant family. She married an officer in the Royal Engineers in 1889 and moved to England, remarrying in 1906 to Edward John Duffus. The novel is set in New York State and involves a family which has fallen on hard times. See Janet B. Friskney's introduction to the Halifax: Formac, 2012, reprint edition, where she makes some comparison with LITTLE WOMEN. The book was aimed at girls. Scarce. No copies on AMICUS. Not in Watters (but should be).
